Stewart Luckman will not be on the 2010 studio tour but you can click on the Home links to see who will be on the tour this year“Every day when I go into my studio I am reminded of the challenges I face in living and making, of peeling and bruising, of carving and polishing. The stones in my studio become an invitation to my eyes and hands, and after working, to the eyes and hands of others, through the metaphor within the sculpture itself.” Stewart moved to San Juan Island with his wife Marilyn in 2001 from the Seattle area and St. Paul, MN. He has been working from his San Juan Island Studio in Portland Fair for the last 8 years. You will view large scale outdoor sculpture, major marble pieces, recent commissions, proposals and maquettes, and new marble works in progress when you visit his studio. A professor emeritus from Bethel University, St. Paul, Minnesota, Luckman is best known for abstract works in metal. His public major pieces include “Starr Wyndere,” city hall, Wyoming, MI; “Ballyviktor,” Hope College, Holland, MI; and “Rokker V,” University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN. Stewart Luckman is also known as the founder of the sculpture program at Bethel University, and was recently recognized at the 21st International Sculpture Conference (ISC) by Ron Pederson, as “the Professor who influenced me to become the sculptor and teacher that this 21st International Sculpture Conference has recognized and present with this award.” Bethel University's sculpture program created a national reputation through its sculpture graduates under Luckman’s leadership, and continues to prepare students who produce significant work throughout the United States. Luckman also teaches in Visiting Artist Programs in the Midwest and on the West Coast. Presently, Stewart’s work is in marble, a material he brought back from Italy, after working there several years ago. This work in marble is poignant and thought provoking. The work addresses the human capacity to overcome adversity and to heal in the wake of tragedy. His studio is open to all, just call ahead for an appointment.
