A third generation photographer, Peter Fromm began taking pictures in 1961. He majored in Photography in the College of Fine Arts at Ohio University. Peter then created an interdisciplinary studies Master's Program at the University of Oregon, which combined Audio-Visual Communication with Environmental Education, and Outdoor Recreation Programs.

Since 1970 Peter has completed many professional photography, multi-projector slide shows, film and video assignments; he also teaches photography classes and is a skilled story teller. Peter collected first- hand accounts of human interactions with whales, dolphins and porpoises from around the world and published two volumes of ‘Whale Tales’.

A life-long outdoorsman, Peter has explored caves, climbed rocks and mountains, rafted white water rivers, sea kayaked, ski toured, winter camped, backpacked, and raced and toured bicycles. He spends as much time as possible outside.

Peter has been living, photographing and boating in the San Juan Islands since 1975. He has built and restored a number of interesting boats, worked on tugs and fishing boats, is a licensed Coast Guard 100 Ton Master, and has been Captain aboard charter and whale watching boats. An avid sailor, Peter raced and cruised on more than 140 boats on several parts of the planet. He has lived aboard ‘Uwila’ a custom, wooden thirty-foot, double-ended yawl since 1979 and cruised extensivly in Pacific Northwest waters. Inspired by historic photos of a square-sailed barge from the 1880’s which was home to three different Northwest photographers, darkroom and studio; Peter has built a forty-three foot sailing & powered catamaran, the ‘Gallery’ to use as his traveling studio.
