Oak will not be in will not be on the 2011 studio tour but you can click on the Home links to see who will be on the tour this yearSearching for “Duende,” that Spanish named trickster, who lures me onward as an artist. Tempting and tantalizing me with “What if…?” ideas that hover at the edge of my perception. Mythological Tricksters like Raven, Coyote and “The Fool,” always accompany me to the trailhead of each new creative journey, jabbering endlessly about the delights that await us. As in a dream, I follow, collecting tools, and books, poems and stories which illustrate and amplify those ideas. When I ‘awaken’ I am alone on the trail and surrounded by images who demand to be made. And so begins the work. This is year three of my new series “Vessels of the Spheres of the Universe” and a companion series of handmade lampshades, called “Let there be Light.” I continue to be fascinated by the challenges of making unspun wool and glittering thread behave like sculptural materials. Creating fabric from nothing, it is like sculpting air. Beads and copper wire have made their way into my studio and onto the work itself. Gold leaf has arrived and made its presence known, while new and more challenging ideas have demanded that I learn new techniques. Color, my old friend continues to teach me new tricks. |
